In the XIXth. Century, almost all women rode sidesaddle for hacking or hunting. The great fashion of show jumping started around 1900. Soon, a group of ladies, often wives or relatives of cavalry officers at this time, rode in mixed or ladies’ classes, this in many local, national and international shows in Europe and America.
The important international ladies’ cups were organized in Aachen, Berlin, Rome, Geneva, Lucerne, Vienna, Pardubice, Dublin, Lisbon, Budapest, etc.
Around the thirties, women started to ride more astride, which was easier and suddenly fashionable.
In 1953, at the Stresa international show (Italy), for the very last time, a well known Italian sportswoman won the Ladies’ cup, only concurrent riding side saddle against some of the best international specialists of the time!
A page of charm and gracious energy was over...
We found interesting to present a portrait of these great figures of vanished international show rings to show off their’ fortitude’ to the rare ladies maintaining the art of side saddle!
